“IN THE BEAUTIFUL MONTH OF MAY” HIGHLIGHTS THE MUSIC OF FRANZ SCHUBERT & ROBERT SCHUMANN AS THE REDLANDS SYMPHONY PAYS TRIBUTE TO SPRING

Maestro Ransom Wilson Conducts, Saturday, April 8th, 8 PM – Memorial Chapel

REDLANDS, CA -- Maestro Ransom Wilson and the Redlands Symphony will bring the beautiful music of Franz SCHUBERT and Robert SCHUMANN to life when they perform In the Beautiful Month of May¸ an adaptation by Reinbert de LEEUW of some of the composers’ greatest works, in a dramatic concert on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 8 PM in Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Redlands. This unique musical event will feature noted soprano Mary Mackenzie in a staged production conceived and directed by A. Scott Parry.

Doors open at 7 PM and Maestro Wilson will present pre-concert remarks at 7:30. The musical portion of the program lasts about 75 minutes. There will be a short intermission and then Maestro Wilson invites the audience to join him, Ms. Mackenzie and Mr. Parry back for a conversation about the music, the composers, and the production.

“We’ve been working very hard to make this a memorable evening,” says Maestro Wilson, “not only because of the stunning music we will be performing, but also because of Mary’s remarkable interpretation of this ‘love story gone wrong’ and Scott Parry’s remarkable staging. We often talk about how music can tell a story. Well, this performance will leave our audience with little doubt about music’s power to do just that.”

Described by the New York Times as “a soprano of extraordinary agility and concentration,” and the Boston Globe as “sensational,” Mary Mackenzie has captured the attention of audiences throughout the United States. Ms. Mackenzie will perform the program in German.

Scott Parry’s stage direction has been hailed by Opera News as “marvelous,” “lively,” “imaginative,” and “spot-on.” His productions have spanned an enormous range of repertoire, from West Side Story to Don Giovanni and La bohème to La Cage aux Folles. According to Parry, “Reinbert de Leeuw adapted and re-composed the Romantic lieder masterpieces of Schubert and Schumann into a modern, cabaret-style song cycle. This is taken one step further by presenting his cycle here as a staged monodrama.”

Tickets, starting at $15, are available at www.redlandssymphony.com, by calling the box office at (909) 587-5565 or at the door on concert night.
