Redlands Symphony kicks off 2016 with music by Tchaikovsky, Vaughan Williams, and Stravinsky
Benjamin Wallfisch conducts
Saturday, January 23, 8 PM, University of Redlands Memorial Chapel
The haunting melodies of Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis” will fill the Memorial Chapel when the Redlands Symphony presents its first concert of 2016 on January 23 at 8PM. The program also includes the wit of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite and Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Symphony No. 4. The concert will be conducted by Benjamin Wallfisch, the second of three candidates hoping to succeed Jon Robertson as Conductor and Music Director of the Redlands Symphony.
Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia” is a natural fit for the stunning acoustics of Memorial Chapel. Originally composed for a performance in an English church, this piece divides the Symphony’s string section into three ensembles which interact with one another in a meditation on a beloved hymn melody.
Like the “Fantasia”, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite draws upon older music for its inspiration. In this work, the elegance and beauty of classical melodies from 18###sup/sup###-century Italy are given new life in arrangements by the 20###sup/sup###-century musical titan responsible for The Firebird and The Rite of Spring.
The highlight of the Redlands Symphony’s performance, though, is likely to be the final work on the program: Tchaikovsky’s remarkable Symphony No. 4. In this work, the great Russian composer struggled with “the fatal power which hinders one in the pursuit of happiness”. Though it struggles with the tragedies of life, the work is carried along on a tide of unstoppable optimism which triumphs in an unforgettable finale.
The concert begins at 8 PM in the Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Redlands. Wallfisch will discuss the program in a free pre-concert lecture at 7:15 PM. For tickets and further information, visit www.RedlandsSymphony.com or call 909-748-8018.
