2 flutes (doubling piccolo), oboe/English horn, 2 clarinets (1st doubling Eb clarinet), bassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, strings (theatrical instrumentation)

Notes

Bernstein’s energetic rhythmic style was perfectly suited to the “flavor” of Candide. One would have to go back to Rossini to find an overture that so completely captures the sense of fun that will follow.
