American-born Cuban and Colombian tenor Anthony Leon is a senior Bachelor of Music major at La Sierra University with an emphasis in vocal performance. He currently studies voice under Javier Gonzalez and Vladimir Chernov.
Anthony has starred in fully staged leading roles such as Tamino in The Magic Flute, the Witch in Englebert Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel, and Frederic in the operetta The Pirates of Penzance, by Gilbert and Sullivan, at La Sierra University.
The world premiere of Anthony’s first compositional endeavor, Tus Ojos for Wind Ensemble and Tenor, was performed in Prague, Czech Republic with the La Sierra Wind Ensemble in the summer of 2017. The American premiere of the piece was performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City along with the La Sierra University Wind Ensemble in 2018.
Anthony has been involved in many recording projects, the first of which was a saxophone solo album which he recorded when he was 14 years old, Fill the World With Love, produced by Sergio Leiva. He has done many more recording projects with Sergio, including three albums with the group United from La Sierra University, including their most recent Christmas album. He’s also recorded a family project called Together We Will Praise. Anthony has toured all over the United States and the world with his recordings, singing in various places in the USA and in places like Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Chile. A vocal classical sacred solo album is currently in the works, to be released in summer of 2019.
Most recently, he won the 2018 Grand Prize, the Spetch-Guy award, for the 60th Annual Concerto Competition at La Sierra University and 2nd place for the Classical Singer Convention National Competition. Other notable honors that Anthony has received include 1st place in the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition, selection as a 1st prize winner for the Redlands Bowl Young Artist Competition, 1st prize in the 2016 Marguerite Marsh Vocal Competition, 1st prize for the 2016 Raincross Chorale Competition, and 3rd prize in the 2015 Promising Young Artist Scholarship Competition Recital.
Anthony has been involved with various musical groups at La Sierra University spanning many different musical styles. He has been involved with the Big Band, Jazz Combos, Saxophone Quartet, UNITED Vocal Group, Wind Ensemble, the Chamber Singers, and University Chorale. Musicians he has worked with include Maestro Herbert Blomstedt, Dr. Raejin Lee, Ms. Fabiana Bravo, Dr. John Craig Johnson, Mrs. Linette Rodríguez, Dr. Elvin S. Rodríguez, Sergio Leiva, Charlie Williams, and Dr. David Brennan.
