John Rubinstein created the title role in the Broadway musical Pippin and won the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Children of a Lesser God. Other Broadway appearances include Ragtime, Hurlyburly, M. Butterfly, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, Fools, and Love Letters. He played the Wizard in Wicked in LA for 18 months and won the Lucille Lortel Award as Best Actor in an off-Broadway play for Elmer Rice’s Counsellor-at-Law. He starred in two TV series, “Family” (Emmy nomination) and “Crazy Like A Fox”, and in close to 200 episodes and MOWs. Films include Hello, I Must Be Going, 21 Grams, Red Dragon, Sublime, The Boys from Brazil, Someone To Watch Over Me, Daniel, and Getting Straight. In New York, LA, and Williamstown, he has directed The Old Boy, Counsellor-at-Law, Phantasie, Nightingale, Top Secret, The Rivals, A Little Night Music, Guys and Dolls, Into The Woods, The Music Man, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Rover, and a national tour of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial; as well as the Emmy Award-winning TV film “A Matter of Conscience” and episodes of “Nash Bridges” and “High Tide.” He is a composer of film music (Jeremiah Johnson, The Candidate) and over 75 TV scores (“China Beach”, “The Dollmaker”), has hosted two radio programs (“Carnegie Hall Tonight” for six years), has recorded over 100 audiobooks, including 25 Jonathan Kellerman novels, and currently teaches musical theater and directs at USC. His most rewarding experience has been participating in the lives of his five children: Jessica, Michael, Peter, Jacob, and Max.
